Maine among worst states for business in CNBC scorecard

CNBC’s latest scorecard of where to do business in the United States puts Maine near the bottom, tied at No. 45 with Rhode Island and dead-last on workforce.

The media outlet looked at more than 60 measures of competitiveness in all 50 states, assigning rankings with input from a broad and diverse array of business and policy experts, official government sources, the CNBC Global CFO Council, the Young Presidents’ Organization and the states themselves.

Researchers then separated those metrics into 10 broad categories, weighted based on how frequently each is used as a selling point in development marketing materials.

Texas shone at No. 1 overall, followed by Washington, Utah, Virginia and Colorado, while Alaska fared the worst at No. 50.

The conclusion for Maine? “Quality of life is high in the Pine Tree State, but the poor workforce and infrastructure are negatives for business.” On the plus side, Maine inched up one spot from No. 46 last year.

In terms of specific categories, Maine  slipped from No. 7 to No. 15 in quality of life while still earning a respectable grade of B-minus. It also scraped by with a D- in cost of living and infrastructure and a D+ in both access to capital and economy.
