The University of Maine received a positive review in the newly published Fiske Guide to Colleges 2019, ranking among the more than 300 “best and most interesting” colleges in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland.

In its profile of UMaine, the publication noted that undergraduates “help themselves to a range of strong academic programs at a reasonable cost,” according to a UMaine news release.

The guide highlights the school’s marine sciences, engineering and honors programs, as well as other signature areas of excellence such as climate change. Popular majors include business management, nursing, psychology and mechanical engineering.

The Fiske Guide to Colleges, founded 35 years ago by a former New York Times education editor, publishes rankings and analyses for more than 320 universities. It includes insights not published on colleges’ websites or official guides along with quotes from students.

It calls UMaine a “sleeper choice for out-of-staters” and cites its Flagship Match program that allows non-residents to pay the same in-state tuition as they would at their state’s flagship universities. It also highlights UMaine’s housing and dining options, the range of student entertainment and activities offered, and the state’s only Division 1 athletics program.

One undergraduate student was quoted as saying that “here at UMaine, there seems to be a widely accepted and shared value of the opportunity to further one’s education,” while another described UMaine students as “laid back, but also exhibit(ing) a love of learning.”

The paperback Fiske Guide to Colleges 2019 retails on Amazon for $17.87.
