USDA opens natural-resources office in Ellsworth

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has opened an office of its Natural Resources Conservation Service in Ellsworth, according to a news release.

The new Hancock County field office is at 474 Bucksport Road, three miles west of downtown.

The move is intended to make it more convenient for local farmers, foresters and landowners to receive technical and financial assistance from the USDA and NRCS, the release said. Previously, Hancock County residents were assisted by the NRCS field office in Bangor, which continues to provide services for Penobscot County.

“NRCS is a voluntary federal agency that is truly here to help the people of Hancock County and Downeast Maine,” said NRCS District Conservationist Chris Phinney.

“There are more than 400 farms in Hancock County, and by working closely with those farmers — as well as foresters and landowners — we may be able to help them boost agricultural productivity and at the same time protect their natural resources.”

He noted that landowners can contact the office for a free resource assessment and advice about voluntary assistance programs that may be available.

More information can be found at www.me.nrcs.usda.gov or by calling the Ellsworth NRCS office at 207-573-5444.
