Serious repairs needed for Camden Opera House
Leaks in the historic Camden Opera House are causing serious interior deterioration that is expected to cost thousands to repair.
The PenBay Pilot reported the town’s select board is considering its options and evaluating how much it might cost to repair bad seams, holes and gutters. The board told Opera House Manager Dave Morrison to consult with Historic Resources Committee member and architect Chris Fasoldt to analyze the overall problem rather than contract for an immediate fix.
Opened in 1894 and on the National Register of Historic Places, the Camden Opera House is a 500-seat auditorium and four conference and meeting rooms owned, managed, and supported financially by the Town of Camden, according to its website.
On its 100th anniversary in 1994, it was renovated and restored and services and technical capacity were subsequently expanded. Annually, the Opera House hosts over 28,000 patrons who have an economic impact within the Camden community of more than $3 million. It’s home to a variety of events as well as Camden’s municipal offices, and also hosts several area conferences, including the Camden Conference and the Camden International Film Festival, which attract hundreds of people from all over the country.
Its events and conferences contribute to Camden’s status as an active year-round community, unlike some other coastal towns that rely mainly on seasonal business.
