Former Birds Eye plant in Caribou to be demolished

Plans are in the works to demolish the former Birds Eye vegetable processing plant on Route 1 in Caribou.

The Fiddlehead Focus reported demolition is scheduled to occur by the end of August, according to city officials. Caribou acquired the property in late 2016. The demolition will give the city a property to market that's suitable for development, Caribou Zoning Administrator Ken Murchison told the newspaper.

“Ideally, the city would like to find a developer or industry concern,” he said, adding the building has been in a state of decay for years.

In 2014, the Bangor Daily News reported that the then-owner of the former vegetable processing plant told members of the Caribou City Council that he would not clean up the site unless he could obtain a grant to do so.

Steven R. Nasiff of the Massachusetts-based Nasiff Land LLC, had owned the property since 2003. The council determined Nasiff was ineligible for grant funds.
