Oakes & Maple at Brunswick Landing closed
The Oakes & Maple Cafe at Brunswick Landing has closed, six months after it opened in space that was formerly the New Beet Market.
The restaurant, owned by David Barter, was in leased space owned by Tom Wright, who also owns several other properties at Brunswick Landing, including the Flight Deck Brewing. Wright is executive director of Seeds of Independence on the campus, a nonprofit youth development and support. organization.
Tuesday, a sign in the window said the cafe was closed, and its Facebook page and website were no longer accessible. It was the only restaurant on the 3,200-acre, 110-business campus.
The restaurant was in 1,621 square feet of space that was once the Navy veterinary clinic.
Oakes & Maple opened there in February, following New Beet Market, which opened in the space in 2016. New Beet partnered with Seeds of Independence and Harpswell Coastal Academy, which is also on the campus, on locally sourced food and internships.
Wild Oats Bakery & Cafe, which has its main location the Tontine Mall in downtown Brunswick, earlier had opened a second location at the site in 2013 but later closed it to focus on its downtown cafe.
After Wright bought the building, it was used in 2012 to test new insulation products by a group of companies, including Dow Corning, Dryvit, Mathews Brothers and Fraunhofer Sustainable Energy Systems, according to the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority website.
The companies made the building extremely energy-efficient, including R-5 rated windows, vacuum-insulated wall panels, and exterior continuous insulation.
