Three Maine counties post record low July unemployment rates
Unemployment rates were the lowest on record for July in Franklin (4.0%), Kennebec (3.2%) and Oxford (3.7%) counties and close to the lowest in most other counties, according to the latest report of the Maine Department of Labor.
Overall, the preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.0% for July was little changed from 2.9% in June and down from 3.5% one year ago.
The number of unemployed declined 2,800 over the year to 21,500.
Maine’s unemployment rate has been below 4.0% for 32 consecutive months, the longest period on record, according to the Maine Department of Labor.
The U.S. preliminary unemployment rate of 3.9% for July was little changed from 4.0% for June and down from 4.3% one year ago.
The New England average for July was 3.6%, with New Hampshire at 2.7%, Vermont at 2.8%, Massachusetts at 3.6%, Rhode Island at 4.1%, and Connecticut at 4.4%.
Unemployment was lowest in Sagadahoc county (2.6%) and highest in Somerset and Washington counties (4.6%). Among metro areas, the unemployment rate was below the statewide average in the Portland-South Portland area (2.7%), close to the average in the Lewiston-Auburn area (3.4%), and above the average in the Bangor area (4.0%).
