Nonprofit artisan lab launches vocational training program in Gouldsboro

The Artisan Lab, a nonprofit vocational training program, has started in Gouldsboro.

The Ellsworth American reported Maine Kiln Works owner Dan Weaver launched the lab this year to build on unused capacity at his business. Artisan Lab is designed to be an immersive program offering long-term residency programs and shorter makeshops.

Weaver cited the Apprentice Shop in Rockland as a model. He incorporated Artisan Labs as a nonprofit earlier this year and has been meeting with the Gouldsboro Planning Board to obtain the appropriate local permitting.

According to the Maine Kiln Works website, Weaver started his workshop in 1971 and works in clay, metal and wood.

According to the website’s Artisan Lab page, the lab is designed to focus on ceramic media and processes but will offer opportunities for other materials and equipment.
