Work progresses on Sanford's ultra-high-speed fiber optic network

Sanford NetFiber, a 45-mile fiber optic network designed to serve the city’s municipal buildings, downtown mill complex, industrial parks and more than 80 other locations, is now under construction.

City Manager Steven Buck said Eustis Cable LLC, the company from Vermont hired to build the network, started construction on SanfordNet Fiber on Aug. 1, Seacoastonline.com reported.

“Based on the reaction thus far, many end-users are anxious to access more competitive products and services for their organizations,” said James Nimon, the executive director of the Sanford Region Economic Growth Council.

According to the council’s June newsletter, the ultra-high speed municipal fiber-to-the-premise network for 87 community anchor institutions is expected to be completed by November.

According to information on the growth council’s website, the network is designed to spur economic development, including job creation and investment. It will be the largest municipal network in Maine. The project was developed by the growth council.

Lack of broadband — cable, satellite, fiber optic, DSL — has long been a problem in Maine, and limits business opportunities in many rural parts of the state, according to the Maine Community Foundation.  It's estimated that 13% of Mainers are underserved by internet connections.
