Central Maine Healthcare's urgent care center will open in Topsham Monday, the next step in the multi-provider Topsham Health Center.

The 40,000-square-foot building at 105 Topsham Fair Mall, at the former Best Buy and Dollar Store location, has already been seeing patients from across the area for cancer care.

Maine Urgent Care will be followed shortly by diagnostics, orthopaedic and plastic surgery providers in the coming weeks.

CMH expects 40 to 50 patients daily at the clinic, which has been designed to offer fast and more affordable and convenient access for patients with minor illnesses and injuries who want to avoid the hospital emergency department or get seen without a lengthy wait, the Lewiston-based health care system said in a news release.

Melissa Caccamo, director of ambulatory services for Central Maine Healthcare said trips to the emergency room can be expensive, and the urgent care center is an efficient solution.

"Depending on your insurance coverage, a visit to Maine Urgent Care can cost up to 10 times less than an ER visit," she said in a news release.

The multi-function health care center amidst the retail malls of the Topsham Fair Mall area also includes oncology, imaging, diagnostics, orthopedics and plastic surgery providers, as well as those offering specialty care in cardiology, vascular health, urology, endocrinology and more.

CMH said the "one-stop" model is the best way to tackle the changing health care environment for patients.

"The future of healthcare in Maine depends on a new model of care delivery, and this new center represents that model," said CMH CEO Jeff Brickman in a news release. "We are providing more affordable, accessible, high-quality care where Mainers live, work, shop and play."

CMH providers will offer rotating clinics for a range of specialties including cardiology, endocrinology, diabetes education, urology, vascular services and more.

Also at the center:

New England Cancer Specialists, one of only 12 practices nationwide and

the only one in Maine named an Accredited Oncology Medical Home, has already started providing cancer care and the site, with three physicians and three other medical staff.

Quest Diagnostics will offer diagnostic testing from a suite at the center starting next month.

Shields Health Care Group, which already partners with CMH to provide mobile MRI and in-hospital imaging services, will offer MRI, CT/PET scans, ultrasound, echocardiography and mammography.

Central Maine Orthopaedics, whose services range from joint replacement to sports medicine, will see patients at Topsham starting later this fall.

Physicians from Plastic and Hand Surgical Associates will see patients for outpatient clinical consultations out of their private suite in the new facility. The medical group will coordinate breast reconstruction services with the CMH surgical oncology team and the medical oncology partnership with NECS.

The center also will include concierge service, valet parking, an accessible patient navigator and online check-in with extended hours for urgent care services.
