The 123-year-old clock atop Biddeford's City Hall is one of 20 historic sites chosen to compete in an online contest for historic preservation money.

Vote Your Main Street, as the contest is called, invites the public to decide which sites among 20 main streets from coast to coast should compete for grant money.

Those who are interested are encouraged to vote once a day for up to five main street projects listed at VoteYourMainStreet.Org. The sites with the most votes at the end will receive grants until the full $2 million in distributed.

The contest is organized by Partners in Preservation, an initiative sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express to engage the public in preserving and increasing awareness of historic place and sustaining local communities.

Since its inception in 2006, Partners in Preservation has committed over $22 million in support of more than 200 sites.

The contest website notes that the Biddeford City Hall Clock Tower once called mill workers to their shifts and welcomed a diverse community downtown.

The project aims to restore the clock and rebuild four faces of decorative work outside the clock room.

Boston's Rosindale Congregational Church is the only other New England landmark in the contest.

Biddeford city leaders have said the tower needs a full revamp worth an estimated $3 million, but they're hoping that they can make a start with the clock.
