The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded close to $5.1 million to Bangor and the Maine Department of Transportation for public transit upgrades, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, announced on Tuesday.

Of that amount, Bangor will receive $2.89 million to make upgrades to its Community Connector Public Transport system through the purchase of new buses, technological advancements and construction of a new facility to replace an outdated bus depot.

In a statement, Collins noted that the Community Connector Public Transit System has been serving Bangor and the surrounding area for more than four decades.

“This funding will allow Bangor to make important updates to its system in order to maintain safe and reliable transportation services for local residents, she added.

Maine DOT will receive $2.2 million to buy 33 replacement buses that serve residents in rural areas across Maine.

The funding was allocated through the Federal Transit Administration’s Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program, which makes federal resources available to states and directs recipients to replace, rehabilitate and purchase buses and related equipment and to purchase bus-related facilities.

Last month, Collins and fellow U.S. Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, wrote to the Federal Transit Administration in support of the two grant applications.
