Axiom Technologies CEO Susan Corbett announced Monday she is stepping down and turning over the CEO duties to Axiom President Mark Ouellette, who joined the company in 2015 with a goal of expanding services across the state of Maine and beyond.

Corbett joined Machias-based Axiom Technologies in 2005 as chief financial officer. Under her leadership, the telecom provider has designed and constructed more than 100 access points, connecting 2,500 square miles in rural Maine.

Since Ouellette joined the company, it has doubled in size. As CEO, Ouellette has a resume of 20 years of economic and community development service, including a number of senior leadership positions in the state of Maine. Previously, he was the executive director of Mobilize Maine, where he worked with regions across the state to help develop and implement measurable, private sector economic development strategies.

Before that, he served as director of business development for Maine. He also served as chief of staff to former U.S. Rep. Tom Allen, D-Maine District 1.

He has a strong track record of successfully writing and securing federal, state, and foundation grants.

Axiom was founded in 2005 with a mission to deliver strategic and customized rural broadband deployment solutions to remote communities everywhere.

In 2010, she was honored by Mainebiz as a “Woman to Watch” for her efforts as Axiom’s CEO to ensure that every resident in Washington County will have broadband connectivity.

In 2014, Axiom spun off its educational services to the Axiom Education & Training Center, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides adult education services in Washington County and digital literacy classes throughout Maine. In the fall of 2017, under the direction of the nonprofit, Corbett founded the National Digital Equity Center with a mission to close the digital divide across Maine and the United States.

Next assignment: National Digital Equity Center

Corbett and Ouellette will continue to work together to expand internet access and education, with Corbett serving as director of the National Digital Equity Center. She will oversee the statewide Maine Digital Inclusion Initiative, a program that will expand digital literacy services to provide training to develop a more highly skilled, job-ready workforce, as well as provide technology training to senior citizens to “age in place.”

The National Digital Equity Center has received a $699,503 AmeriCorps grant from the Maine Commission for Community Service to support 16 AmeriCorps members who will provide digital literacy training. Funding has also been received from the John T. Gorman Foundation to support the Maine Digital Inclusion Initiative.

This funding will support AmeriCorps members in eight counties across the state. AmeriCorps members will tackle the critical challenges of closing the digital divide, allowing the National Digital Equity Center program to expand its impact on this important local issue. The remaining eight counties will be served by NDEC digital literacy staff.

“AmeriCorps is an indispensable resource to help meet critical challenges facing our communities and nation,” said Corbett, who is founder of the National Digital Equity Center. "We're thrilled that the Maine Commission for Community Service has recognized the potential that AmeriCorps members in Maine offer to communities. These AmeriCorps members will meet pressing local needs as they develop civic and leadership skills that last a lifetime.”
