Employees from Patco in Sanford construct a playground for students at Waban's Fraser-Ford Child Development Center.

Waban, a Sanford community organization that supports adults and children with special needs, got a hand from Patco Construction with design and installation of a new playground structure at its Fraser-Ford Child Development Center.

Patco, a commercial and residential construction firm also located in Sanford, developed and installed the playground, which will be used by children who have autism. The playground will allow Waban students to get active, play, learn and enjoy spending time outdoors with other students in a safe environment, Waban officials said.

Greg Patterson, Patco president, said it was easy to get the company's team on board.

"The Sanford region is more just than our place of business; it's where many members of our staff call home," he said in a news release. "It was a privilege to volunteer our services to Waban and have the opportunity to not only support their amazing non-profit organization, but to also give back to the greater Sanford community as a whole."

The Fraser-Ford Child Development Center provides full day, therapeutic resources and curriculum to children with Pervasive Developmental Disorder and autism from preschool through second grade. Waban's Fraser-Ford programming offers students a small classroom environment, using social connections and interactive play to help children learn life skills.

Neal Meltzer, Waban's executive director, said the playground makes a difference for the children who will use it.

"Without Patco's volunteer efforts, the children would not have an opportunity to be outside and grow and learn," he said. "[Owner] Mark and Greg Patterson are so busy that they are turning away work, but they did not hesitate to take on this project for the children. We truly appreciate them and their team donating their time and talent to give our kids a great place to play."
