Extensive sewer and water line work disrupts downtown Bangor

Work to replace Civil War-era sewer, water and storm water pipes that has been disrupting the commercial area of downtown Bangor is nearing completion.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the work, around two of the area’s busiest intersections, is almost ready to wrap up. The work began last October and has narrowed streets, limited parking and posed detours, delays and bumpy roads. No further major projects are planned.

“We’re going to give the downtown a little time to catch its breath,” city engineer John Theriault told the newspaper.

However, the city is reviewing proposed conceptual safety improvement plans for a portion of Broadway (Route 15) from the intersection of Center Street and the Interstate 95 northbound ramps to the intersection of Broadway and the I-95 southbound ramps.

According to city documents, the section of Broadway was identified within the 2015 Broadway Corridor Study as experiencing a higher-than-average number of accidents and heavy congestion during weekday commuting periods. The Maine Department of Transportation has funded a project to further evaluate the section and design safety improvements to address the high number of crashes and vehicle congestion.

The city of Bangor selected Gorrill Palmer Consulting Engineers Inc. to provide traffic evaluation and design services for the project.

The projects are part of the city’s growth on a number of fronts.

From the waterfront to downtown, Bangor is seeing investment and change. That includes Hollywood Casino and Racetrack, Cross Insurance Center and the Waterfront Concert as entertainment focal points; and construction of phase one of the new waterfront headquarters of Bangor Savings Bank, Maine's second largest bank. And the downtown, arguably one of Maine's most architecturally distinguished, has seen an influx of new restaurants and stores.
