Grove Collaborative, an e-commerce company based in San Francisco that sells natural home, beauty and personal care products directly to consumers, hosted a ribbon-cutting event Nov. 20 to celebrate the opening of its first East Coast office in Portland.

The company announced in a news release it is actively hiring employees as it ramps up to what is expected to be a workforce of 100 full-time-employees at its 9,000-square-foot site at 123 Middle St. in Portland. The new technology jobs in Portland will support Grove’s e-commerce platform for all-natural home and personal products.

Matthew Bray will lead Grove Collaborative’s Portland operations.

Founded in 2016, Grove Collaborative has more than 300 employees between its headquarters in San Francisco and warehouses in Missouri, Pennsylvania and Nevada. Grove Collaborative has raised more than $100 million in venture capital funding to date.

It says its mission is to help consumers create healthy and beautiful environments by making all-natural products more accessible and easy to purchase, adding that “each Grove customer is assigned a ‘Grove Guide,’ a personal shopper who provides direct assistance in selecting Grove’s all-natural, cruelty free, and safe home and personal care products.”

“Portland and its wonderful community align well with our values and our mission,” Grove’s co-founder and CEO Stuart Landesberg said in a news release. “We believe in great employees, and that those employees create the best experience for our customers. Portland will be the perfect fit for Grove.”

Peter DelGreco, president and CEO of Maine & Co., which helped attract the company to Portland, said he looked forward to the company growing in Portland “and providing important technology-based jobs to our region.”

“We are excited to have Grove Collaborative select Maine as its flagship East Coast location,” he said. “The company’s success in attracting multiple rounds of venture capital speaks to its strong brand and management team.”

Grove Collaborative is one of approximately 1,700 Certified B Corp. companies that meet rigorous standards for businesses that support social, environmental and community well being. Every item it sells, the company stated, "has been rigorously tested by industry experts for health, effectiveness and environmental impact."

Examples of other Certified B Corp. companies in Maine include ReVision Energy and Coastal Enterprises Inc. Other companies outside of Maine include Patagonia, Seventh Generation, Etsy and Ben & Jerry's.
