Go.Verizon: Portland best city in U.S. for small businesses

Portland is the No. 1 ranked city in the newly released “Best Small Cities for Small Businesses” report issued by Go.Verizon.com, an authorized brand partner of Verizon.

Noting that small businesses make up 99.7% of employers in the United States, Go.Verizon gathered data from nearly 300 cities across the country with populations between 50,000 and 75,000. Its list of the top 50 startup-friendly cities is based on six metrics:

  • Education level of the local workforce
  • Travel time to work
  • Income per capita
  • Broadband access
  • Loans per capita
  • Tax scores, based on the Tax Foundation’s 2018 State Business Tax Climate Index

“Portland certainly proves itself as the scrappy small city contender,” Go.Verizon stated in its brief description announcing its Top 10 small biz-friendly cities in the country. “With a population on the lowest end of the top 10 spectrum, Portland certainly proves itself as the scrappy small business contender. Tucked in the far northeast corner of the U.S., this city enjoys a lucrative port close to Boston and an incredibly low unemployment rate. Folks generally spend less than 20 minutes traveling to work, and nearly half the population holds a bachelor’s degree. If there’s any indication of the city’s personality, its seal depicts a phoenix rising from the ashes -- so it’s safe to say that Portland rolls with the punches and is determined to come out on top. Like we said before -- scrappy.”

Here are the remaining top 10 cities in Go.Verizon’s list: 2) Weston, Fla.; 3) Missoula, Mont.; 4) Southfield, Mich.; 5) Delray Beach, Fla.; 6) South Jordan, Utah; 7) Kissimmee, Fla.; 8) Rochester Mills, Mich.; 9) Rapid City, S.D.; 10) Bismarck, N.D.

“A painful amount of small cities are constantly overshadowed in the media by big players like New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc., despite offering better chances at business success,” Go.Verizon stated in a news release announcing its report. “But avoiding the chaos and competition of large cities and planting your roots in a quieter, yet equally industrious pocket of the country puts your business in a uniquely advantageous position. After some generous research and a bit of computing on our part, we found that the small the city, the more room there is to grow.”
