Northern Light Mercy Hospital announced this week a new collaboration with New England Cancer Specialists, described on its website as the region’s largest medical oncology group, with nearly half of Maine’s board-certified medical oncologists on its team.

Portland-based Mercy said NECS providers, including Drs. David Benton, Devon Evans, Chiara Battelli, Kurt Ebrahim and Nurse Practitioner Arlene Damon, have begun seeing patients at the hospital’s cancer care practice located on its Fore River campus.

“These experienced cancer experts will join Dr. Anna Niegowska and our clinical team of nurses, researchers, and social workers to greatly expand our program’s capacity,” said Charlie Therrien, president of Mercy Hospital. “Working together, they will increase access to cancer treatment in our region and continue the outstanding oncology and hematology care Mercy is known for in our community.”

The NECS providers joining Mercy’s cancer care program are available to established and new Mercy patients and they will cover in-house consults and admissions.

“Our providers are pleased to be able to collaborate with Northern Light Mercy Hospital to expand access to the highest-quality cancer care,” said Dr. Chiara Battelli, president of New England Cancer Specialists. “We look forward to continuing toward our goal of achieving each patient’s best outcome.”

Mercy Hospital’s comprehensive cancer care program provides high quality, personalized and coordinated care. Patients have access to genetic testing and counseling, clinical trials, full-scope oncology evaluation, hematology, infusion, psychosocial, and supportive services close to home.

Mercy’s cancer program has been recognized by continuous accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
