Maine Office of Tourism to award bicentennial marketing grants

The Maine Office of Tourism will award up to $100,000 in marketing grants to promote projects celebrating the 200th anniversary of Maine becoming a state next year.

The Bicentennial Marketing Grants will provide matching marketing money for tourism-specific bicentennial projects that will help drive overnight visitation to Maine beginning in July and running through 2020, Maine’s bicentennial year. Grant applications will be accepted for review this spring and fall.

“Maine’s 200th anniversary creates an opportunity for us to elevate our state’s visibility in the global markets by sharing some of the stories and places that make Maine special,” Steve Lyons, director of the Maine Office of Tourism, said in a news release. “With these grants, we can support the work being done on the ground to celebrate the bicentennial in a way that both attracts visitors and builds community pride.”

The Bicentennial Marketing Grant program will be offered during 2019 in addition to the biannual Tourism Enterprise and Special Event grant programs established in 2014.

Special Event Grants fund major events that have an impact on travel in at least two or more regions or generate national or international press coverage for Maine. The events must have the potential to create multi-regional and/or statewide economic impacts that draw tourism-related activity inside Maine and from beyond its borders.

Tourism Enterprise Grants provide money to smaller or focused tourism-marketing projects by permanent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(6) incorporated organizations, whose primary purpose is to promote and expand tourism in Maine.

Organizations applying for funding must be a Maine municipality or a Maine-based nonprofit that meets the grant guideline requirements.

All applications for the spring 2019 grant cycle are due by 2 p.m. on Friday, May 10.
