With all the noise out there on Facebook, websites, blogs and Twitter, the public is overwhelmed with words. So are news professionals, who must field pleas by nonprofits that their cause is the one that should get coverage.
But here’s the problem: many nonprofit staff and boards have forgotten how to speak English. Instead, they speak Jargon, and can’t convey meaning. When a group of folks who want to help teens stay out of trouble promote themselves by saying, instead, that their work “empowers the community to promote positive youth development and strengthen community assets by coordinating services and opportunities through prevention initiatives,” we need to learn to speak English again.
This SkillBuilder will include how to clear up the clutter of words and craft strong, straightforward messages, recognizing jargon for what it is, as well as a focus on the recipient of the message, not its maker.

If you don't have the time, budget or expertise to incorporate a website in your outreach/communication strategy or even doubt that a website would be a worthwhile venture for your organization, consider employing Google Apps. During this webinar we'll explore how nonprofits can take advantage of the user-friendly suite of applications by Google and also discuss the value of a nonprofit's presence online. Smaller nonprofits will benefit more, but Google Apps is scalable and is now being used by large organizations, universities and branches of government.
This SkillBuilder will include an overview of Google Apps and how it can be applied by nonprofits, a "How-To" on implementing Google Apps and building your website, as well as a primer on web-design to maximize the effectiveness of your site.

“Storytelling is the single most important tool in a leader’s toolkit.” Dr. Howard Gardner, Harvard University Professor and Author
Storytelling is the oldest form of teaching. From ancient parables to urban myths, a well-told story will spread and its audience will multiply many times over. It’s also an effective tool for your organization to show who you are, what you do, and how you make a difference. For discussion, you are encouraged to bring an example of a brief story to share with the group, such as, a specific person your organization has helped, a memorable co-worker or volunteer, or how the work your organization does has affected you personally.
This SkillBuilder will include case studies of organizational storytelling, enhancing your stories with photos, and how to tell your story - common traits of successful stories.
