Tannery acquisition to create jobs in Maine

11/12/07

A tannery based in Berwick on Friday said it would acquire a tannery in Wisconsin, bringing up to 50 jobs to Maine.

Prime Tanning Co. said it has signed a letter of intent to purchase Cudahy Tanning Co. of Cudahy, Wis., according to a press release. Prime will transfer Cudahy's operation to the Hartland headquarters of Irving Tanning Co., which it acquired in August. Prime expects to hire between 40 and 50 new workers in Hartland over the next several months, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The combined businesses, to be called Prime Tanning Co., will be the largest leather producer in North America, with revenues in excess of $250 million, according to the press release.
