State regulators today granted final approval to a major wind farm project planned for Franklin County.

The Land Use Regulation Commission today granted final development approval to Calgary, Alberta-based TransCanada for its 132 megawatt Kibby Wind Power Project, located along Kibby Mountain and Kibby Range in northwestern Franklin County. The project will include 44 wind turbine generators, and will employ up to 250 people during the 12 to 18 month construction period, according to a press release from the company. Once the wind farm is operational, it will permanently employ 10 to 12 people. The cost of the project is roughly $320 million.

The Kibby Wind Power Project will generate enough electricity to annually power 50,000 average Maine homes, making it the largest wind power project to be approved in New England, the release says.
