Labor Day traffic takes a dip

09/02/08

Traffic on the Maine Turnpike over the Labor Day weekend decreased roughly 3.2% from last year, according to preliminary figures from the Maine Turnpike Authority.

The MTA estimates roughly 710,000 vehicles travelled over the turnpike over the long weekend, a decrease from the roughly 750,000 vehicles that traveled the turnpike this weekend last year.

Overall this summer, a combination of rain, high gas prices and a faltering economy decreased traffic by roughly 5.4% from last year, according to the MTA.
