Report: Invest in the Northern Forest

10/08/08

The Sustainable Economy Initiative, a regional committee created in 2006 to explore ways to boost economic development in the Northern Forest, today released its report summarizing its plans for economic growth.

The report, "Economic Resurgence in the Northern Forest," details long-term goals for economic development in the Northern Forest, including increasing high-speed telecommunications, developing more public and private transportation systems and investing in developing a creative economy based on the region's resources. The Northern Forest stretches 400 miles and encompasses 30 million acres across the upper reaches of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.

The report, which was developed by a committee of 60 representatives from those four states, as well as the Northern Forest Center and the North Country Council, recommends governors from each state form a council to implement its goals.
