Penn Nat’l Gaming funds slot campaign

10/28/08

New campaign finance reports have revealed that the Pennsylvania parent company of the state's only racino, Hollywood Slots in Bangor, is the company behind the campaign to bring a racino to Scarborough.

Penn National Gaming Inc., which opened Hollywood Slots in 2005, is sole funder of the Scarborough Village Partnership LLC political action committee, and gave the PAC $62,389 between Aug. 12 and Oct. 16, according to the Portland Press Herald. "They own the [facility] in Bangor; they'd like to have another facility here at Scarborough Downs," Kathryn Rolston, treasurer of the Scarborough Village political action committee, told the Press Herald. "You can only have them at commercial racetracks, and there's two in the state."

Scarborough residents will vote on Nov. 4 whether to amend local zoning ordinances to allow slot machines at commercial racetracks in town. If the town votes yes, the Legislature and governor would have to approve legislation to change state law. The issue would then return to Scarborough voters to approve any deal drawn up between a gaming operation and town officials, the paper reported.
