Maine Sox Fans provide granite for Yankees

04/24/09

About eight million pounds of granite for the new Yankee Stadium were provided by die-hard Red Sox fans here in Maine.

The granite rings for the base of the façade of the stadium, which opened April 16, came from the Connecticut-based New England Stone's Crotch Island Quarry on Deer Isle, the last major working island quarry in the state, according to the Sun Journal.

Foreman Danny Hypes and the Maine crew that cut the stone are all Red Sox fans, and didn't know where the granite was headed until contacted by the media, the paper reported.
