Modular home builders in western Maine could get a boost from a recent law aimed at replacing Maine's energy-inefficient housing stock.

MaineHousing, formerly the Maine State Housing Authority, and the Maine Affordable Housing Coalition are working with modular home builders in the Oxford Hills area to use new state bond funding to replace aging manufactured housing stock with new energy-efficient housing, according to news channel WLBZ 2.

The project is part of a law passed this summer, LD 1485, An Act Regarding Maine's Energy Future, which includes $30 million in bonds issued over the next two years through MaineHousing to finance the construction of efficient affordable housing. Linda Walbridge, director of the Western Maine Economic Development Council, told the news channel the partnership is important to keeping the work here in Maine, instead of having the homes built by companies in Pennsylvania, as has been done in the past.

The funds for single-family homes will not be issued until July, but money for multi-family modular units could become available in the next few months, according to WLBZ.
