BIW union resumes local control

02/08/10

Bath Iron Works' largest union is back under local control after nearly two years in trusteeship by its parent organization.

Local S6, which was put under control of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in March 2008 for alleged mismanagement, is now under the management of new local leaders elected this fall, according to The Times Record. Todd McPhee, the new president of the 3,200-member union, said his priority is to process a backlog of grievances and arbitrations.

The union's four former leaders, suspended in 2008 amid allegations of financial mismanagement, illegal elections and pornography on union computers, still plan to sue the parent organization in state and federal courts, claiming defamation and illegal discipline on the part of the parent union. A federal judge last year ruled against the four officers and refused to overturn the trusteeship, but referred the claims of defamation to the state court.
