Down East hospital license reinstated

03/10/10

A beleaguered Machias hospital has received its full state license after more than a year of operating under a conditional status.

The license requalification at Down East Community Hospital comes a few weeks after surveyors from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services made an unscheduled visit and found favorable conditions, according to the Bangor Daily News. The hospital was given a conditional license in 2008 and put under receivership by Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems last July following federal investigations into clinical and administrative complaints. In December, the hospital was cleared to continue receiving Medicare payments.

Interim CEO Doug Jones told the paper the hospital must still appoint a new board of trustees and develop a new financial plan before DHHS can petition the court to remove the receivership status.
