More charges for Rent-a-Husband founder?

03/18/10

Additional charges could be filed against Rent-a-Husband founder Kaile Warren of Windham, who was indicted in December for fraud.

The state Attorney General's Office is considering more criminal charges or a superseding indictment against Warren, and recently issued subpoenas to Portland law firm Preti Flaherty, which represented Warren for two years until 2008, according to the Portland Press Herald. Warren had previously implied that any improper activity could be the fault of Preti's guidance.  At a Cumberland County Superior Court hearing yesterday, Gerald Petruccelli, an attorney for Preti Flaherty, argued the law firm should not be ordered to turn over documents related to Rent-a-Husband's investments, saying a court order must be filed before subpoenas are issued. If the law firm turns over documents presumed confidential, it could violate Maine Bar Rules, Petruccelli argued. The court is expected to issue a ruling on whether Preti must comply with the subpoenas in the next few weeks.

Warren pleaded not guilty to three charges of securities fraud at the end of last year.
