Products: BIW designed and continues to build the DDG 51-class Arleigh Burke destroyers, the Navy’s longest-running shipbuilding program. The shipyard also is responsible for modernization and lifecycle support of ships already deployed in the fleet.

Career/job opportunities: BIW is currently hiring skilled trades including welders, pipefitters, electricians, carpenters and general laborers, designers and engineers. With almost 7,000 employees, the shipyard is often compared to a small city and supports its own security force, fire department, medical facility and finance department. We are hiring for positions in all types of roles throughout our business, including patrol officers, firefighters and nurses.

We also offer apprenticeship opportunities for highly motivated students interested in shipbuilding careers. BIW Apprentices earn while they learn through both academic and on-the-job training that, upon completion, provides an Associate of Science degree, that could also lead to a full bachelor’s or master’s degree. The School offers programs in shipbuilding trades, marine design, and production planning.

Sustainability: BIW is actively engaged in efforts to protect the Kennebec River, reduce the company’s carbon footprint and each year recycles thousands of pounds of scrap wood and steel. We also have one of the most successful ride-sharing programs in the state, with dozens of van and car pools. BIW is actively engaged with the GO MAINE ride-sharing service and subsidizes a commuter bus between Lewiston-Auburn and the shipyard.
