2010 lobster catch sets new record

As predicted, Maine lobstermen brought in a record-breaking catch for 2010 season at more than 90 million pounds.

Last year’s harvest of 93.4 million pounds beat out the previous record of 81.2 million pounds set in 2009, according to The Associated Press. The value of the catch was $308 million, and lobstermen received an average of $3.31 a pound for their catch, up from $2.93 a pound in 2009. In eastern Maine, the catch increased 55% from three years ago, with lobstermen in Hancock County bringing in more than 31 million pounds.

In February, the Department of Marine Resources released preliminary catch figures predicting that the 2010 catch would set a new record.
