A Look Back: A recession-era debate rages over R&D

In July 2009, with the country mired in recession, Mainebiz cited a report saying Maine needed to increase what it spends on research and development. The report asked readers if the private sector “was in position to ramp up R&D spending.” Three-quarters of voters, or 75.7%, said no. The question stoked some furious debate. “NO! The private sector is struggling just to exist in Maine,” one voter said. But another took up the R&D cause: “The private sector really doesn’t have a choice. The only way for businesses to grow is through R&D.”

Fun Fact: Ten years ago, Mainebiz reported that Maine’s highest median sales price for a home was in Ogunquit, at $485,000. The Top 5 was rounded out by Southport ($455,000), Kennebunkport ($410,000), Falmouth ($405,000) and Newcastle ($382,500). Statewide, the median sales price was $194,000.
