Workers at the State Theatre in Portland have approved their first contract with Crobo, the venue's operator, after nearly a year of negotiations with IATSE Local 114.

In January, employees voted to join Local 114, setting off months of bargaining aimed at reaching a contract for stagehands and stage technicians. With ratification, all members of the bargaining unit will now be fully represented by IATSE.

"I’m grateful for my coworkers who stood strong and trusted me to represent them through negotiations," said Matt Doiron, a longtime stage technician for the State Theatre.

The agreement follows more than two years of organizing by theater staff.

Rosie Stevens, a spokesperson for IATSE Local 114, told Mainebiz that the agreement covers areas such as wage increases, safety and staffing.

Local 114 business agent Devon Mendeiros said the contract reflects years of persistence by the bargaining unit. "I look forward to strengthening the bond between employer and union with the shared goal of creating a sustainable, safe, and productive working environment, so that we can all continue to do what we love doing for many years to come; bring live music to life in the heart of Portland.”

The IATSE said the ratification comes as more entertainment workers nationwide seek union representation for better safety, treatment and compensation.

At this time, Mainebiz was unable to reach the State Theatre for comment.
