Bangor has new downtown transit center in the works

Bangor’s city council selected the courtyard-building-and-canopy concept for the new Bangor Transit Center.
The city of Bangor has plans underway to build a new downtown transit hub, in Pickering Square.
The 2,200-square-foot transit center and associated site work will be located at 25 Water St. Artifex Architects & Engineers of Bangor was hired last September to do the design work.
Dubbed the Bangor Transit Center at Pickering Square, the project involves designing a new, one-story building, canopy and amenities designed to improve passenger experience, the city’s project engineer, Jefferson Davis, told the Bangor City Council in a recent update.
The new facility will incorporate Americans With Disabilities Act-accessible elements to enhance usability and mobility for all users. Amenities will include hearing and air conditioning, an enclosed waiting area, outside shelters and interactive schedule information kiosks, public restrooms and bus operators' break room and private restroom.
Construction is anticipated to begin this summer.
“I’m excited about this,” said one councilor. “The area needed something like this and it might encourage more people to use public transportation.”
The city has said that the goal of this and other downtown infrastructure projects is to better define pedestrian, public transportation and private vehicle flow; add amenities like EV chargers and bike storage spaces; and create better connections between the downtown and the waterfront.

Public transportation and affordable housing go hand-in-hand.
The City has had to cut way back on bus routes and now they're investing in this building meant to encourage riders. Why not pay the drivers more so the City can retain the drivers they have as well as attract new drivers so they can bring back all of the routes again? Also, they should expand route hours so people would be able to use the bus to reliably get to work and back. Seems like these things are more important and useful to riders than a building.
