Which Maine employers are the best of the best?
In August, 100 businesses made the roster of the "Best Places to Work in Maine" — the most ever in the annual award program's 14-year history. But the rankings of the "best places" were not revealed until Wednesday night, at a ceremony in the Augusta Civic Center attended by over 900 people.
For the sixth consecutive year, Edward Jones, the nationwide financial advisory firm with 20 locations in Maine, took top honors among large companies (those with 250 or more U.S. employees).
Maine State Credit Union, which has two locations in Augusta and one in Waterville, won in the medium-size employer category (50 to 249 U.S. employees), after ranking No. 2 in its category last year and No. 17 in 2017.
Planson International, a New Gloucester-based supplier of information and communication technology, was first among smaller businesses (15 to 49 U.S. employees). That ranking was also up from a second-place finish last year, and followed Planson's No. 14 ranking in 2017.
The Maine State Council of the Society for Human Resources Management sponsors the Best Places awards to recognize companies that have established and consistently fostered outstanding work environments. The organization that administers the program, Best Companies Group, gathered information about all the contenders, including their employee benefits, workplace policies and employee responses to a satisfaction survey.
Employers are ranked in order of the highest scores in the evaluation process.
All participating companies receive an employee feedback report in an effort to help them improve their scores. The report summarizes employee engagement and satisfaction data and includes employees’ written comments. The report is used by many organizations to make improvements in their workplace culture.
