Brewer auto parts maker merged

An automotive components manufacturer in Brewer is merging with a sister company.

Brewer Automotive Components is merging with Wytheville Technologies Inc. in Virginia, according to the Bangor Daily News. The Brewer plant, which makes suspension and steering components, opened in 1989 as a partnership between Michigan-based ZF Group North American and Japan-based Somic Ishikawa Inc. The two plants are now solely owned by Somic and the new merged company will be known as Somic America Inc.

The move will not mean any job losses, and could help stabilize the Brewer plant over the next few years, according to the paper. The two plants employ about 195 people.

ZF Group North American is the parent company of ZF Lemforder, also in Brewer, which the company announced last January will close in mid-2010, putting 127 people out of work.
