As buzz continues about Sunday’s Oscars presentation and movie-star slapdown, a Hollywood actress is beginning a new role in Prospect, Maine.

Brooke Shields, headliner of film and fashion, has joined Prospect Farms, a producer of hemp-derived wellness products, as chief brand officer and a member of the company’s board of directors.

Shields will advise the company and work with its management on product development, marketing and community engagement, according to a news release Tuesday.

She’s also become one of the largest shareholders in the private company, CEO and Brand Founder Brad Tipper told Mainebiz.

“Brooke is not a spokesperson, rather she is joining as an active partner,” he said in an email. Her mission, he said, is “to elevate brand awareness and share the story of Prospect Farms, particularly for those desperately seeking relief and struggling to find truly trusted sources.”

The company, which launched in 2018, wouldn’t disclose details of Shields’ duties, any compensation, or how much time she’ll devote to the job. But Tipper emphasized her willingness to personally participate in his company.

“Brooke organically found Prospect Farms,” he said. “The brand did not seek her out … she personally found relief from Prospect  Farms’ Sleep & Anxiety drops & Pain Relief topicals. Brooke could partner with any brand but she chose Prospect Farms based on her personal experience.”

In the news release, Shields referred to her recovery from injuries over the past year and vouched for her use of the company’s organic cannabidiol products.

“The sustainability and single source traceability of botanical ingredients, especially amid the industry’s greenwashing epidemic, is more important than ever, ultimately leading me to Prospect Farms,” she said. “I look forward to elevating the conversation around brands and products, and in turn helping wellness consumers everywhere find trust, transparency, and most important, relief.”

Prospect Farms makes over 50 tinctures and creams from CBD, a substance obtained from hemp plants, at a 250-acre farming and manufacturing complex in the Waldo County town of Prospect, near Bucksport. The farm itself dates back several centuries, and the company works closely with a Mainer, Tom Davis, whose family has run a local dairy business for generations.

Tipper wouldn't disclose the company's revenues, but said it currently employs 20 people.

Shields, 56, worked as a child model and then gained critical acclaim at age 12 for her leading role in Louis Malle's film “Pretty Baby.” She later starred in movies including “The Blue Lagoon” and Franco Zeffirelli's “Endless Love,” and played the title role in “Suddenly Susan,” a TV comedy in the 1990s.

Since then she has played minor roles in television and film, and served as an advocate for health-related causes.
