Central Maine Medical Center's president Wednesday cited positive feedback on its efforts to rectify a poor January report on protocol compliance from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid systems.

The Lewiston-based hospital also announced Wednesday that it was awarded an "A" from the hospital safety organization, the second time in seven months it's received an "A" grade from the organization.

In January, a survey from CMS determined the hospital did not meet its requirements as a Medicare services supplier following a medical error. the survey focused on non-compliance in following protocol. In a February letter, CMS told the hospital its Medicare agreement would terminate May 4 if the hospital was found not to be in compliance. That deadline was later extended to June 30.

CMMC President David Tupponce said Wednesday the hospital is continuing to work closely with federal and state partners on the compliance issue.

"We have every expectation that we will be found in compliance with standards," he told Mainebiz in an email. "In fact, we’ve received positive feedback from CMS about our progress in meeting our goals."

The Leapfrog Group Spring 2019 Hospital Safety Grade designation recognizes the hospital's efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting safety standards. The Leapfrog Group is a national organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers.

The Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other patient harm.

“Quality and safety are our highest priorities,” Tupponce said in a news release announcing the Leapfrog grade. “This 'A' grade in hospital safety validates our efforts and our consistent progress toward those goals.”

The grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice a year. The methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public, the organization said.

The organization said that CMMC’s emphasis on safety has resulted in significant decreases in central-line infections, catheter-acquired urinary tract infections, surgical site infections, pressure ulcers (bedsores) and post-operative wound dehiscence (infections along incision lines).

CMMC was also accredited last year for its advanced primary stroke care and four separate orthopedic subspecialties, and recertified as a Level II Trauma Center.

The hospital is part of Central Maine Healthcare system, which also includes Bridgton and Rumford hospitals, and the Topsham Care Center.

Maine ranks No. 3 in latest Leapfrog ranking

Maine rose seven spots and now ranks third in the top 10 states with the safest hospitals, according to the Leapfrog Group’s spring 2019 Hospital Safety Grades.

Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. The methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent and the results are free to the public.  In its Hospital Safety Grades report, The Leapfrog Group assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.

Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford also was awarded an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade.

“This is the third time in a row that SMHC has earned the ‘A’ grade and that is because of the dedication our providers and staff have to ensuring the safest level of care for our patients,” said Dr. Nate Wilson, vice president of quality and safety. “We put patient safety first, and our continued ‘A’ grade reflects that.”
