Efficiency Maine boosts incentives for commercial electric vans

Rebates on the purchase of some electric vehicles have been substantially increased for Maine businesses, government entities and nonprofits.

Rebates up to $14,000 are available through April 30, 2026, on the purchase of new — not used — commercial electric vans.

A short list of van models that are eligible for the rebates is on the Efficiency Maine website, along with other program details.

The incentive picks up some slack from a federal tax credit program for EV purchases that expired Sept. 30, though this is limited to commercial vans. Leased and hybrid vehicles are not eligible for the rebates.

To qualify for a rebate, buyers must purchase an off-peak charger prior to buying the van; the charger must be activated via Wi-Fi and installed where the vehicle will be regularly parked — all within 90 days of vehicle purchase.

Efficiency Maine is offering a price break on the chargers — $129 instead of the standard $300 price. 

The federal tax credit program for EV purchases expired Sept. 30, but Maine has extended it for both individuals and businesses. While the federal program offers only a tax credit, Efficiency Maine’s program provides an instant rebate from the dealer at the time of purchase.

A total of $2.4 million has been budgeted for the rebates in fiscal year 2026, and Efficiency Maine Executive Director Michael Stoddard told Mainebiz that there is no end point in sight for the program.
