Schools and public buildings are in the works
Nickerson O'Day, Inc. has been named the construction manager for the $6.5 million renovation and expansion of the John Bapst Memorial High School on the corner of downtown Broadway and Somerset streets in Bangor. The renovation and expansion includes a new gymnasium, cafeteria, fitness center and innovation-and-engineering center. It's the largest addition in the high school's 90-year history and will substantially expand the Broadway campus.
Ledgewood Construction, South Portland, will hold a ground-breaking Sept. 13 for the new Camden-Rockport Middle School. The school will be 84,000 square feet and cost $28 million. Ledgewood has done a wide range of school construction in Maine.
Landry/French Construction, Scarborough, is working on a two-building, 130,000- square-foot project that will be state office space for the Department of Health and Human Services and the Maine Employees Retirement System. The project, on the 10-acre Capitol Street site that once housed the Department of Transportation garage, is expected to be done in February. The 26,000-square-foot MERS building will be at the corner of Capitol and Florence streets, with the adjacent 104,000-square-foot DHHS building on the corner of Capitol and Sewall, opposite the State House.
Landry/French is also renovating a 79,000-square-foot building at 2 Edison Drive in Augusta. Maine State Housing Authority will be moving into the building from its current site in downtown Augusta. MaineHousing bought the building, which dates to 1967, in January for $1.6 million from Eaton Corp. It was last modified in 1986, when a 65,000-square foot addition was added.
Barrett Made said a fall opening is planned for the Public Works, a collective workspace in Portland's evolving Bayside neighborhood. The Public Works, at 52 Alder St., will be “a three-tiered creative hub” that will include private and shared spaces, including a shared kitchen, bathrooms and multi-purpose meeting space, two workshops for larger needs and an event space with “a modern industrial vibe.” Barrett Made, founded in 2015, is a design-build firm owned and operated by Rob Barrett. Its services include architectural renderings, commercial construction, residential construction, custom millwork and interior design. It has 22 full-time employees. Elsewhere, it is working on ReVision Energy's new headquarters in South Portland and the North Yarmouth Wescustogo Hall and Community Center.
Archtype Structures, West Gardiner, is selling a range of arched buildings, which at first glance resemble the old Quonset hut. They're targeting a variety of markets: residential, multi-family, condo, vacation home, agricultural use, commercial, professional or retail. The construction includes steel connectors, engineered wood timbers and structural insulated panels (making them a good deal more efficient to heat than the old Quonset hut).
