Flagship closes second theater in six months

Flagship Cinemas has closed its second theater within six months, this time in Lewiston.

The Sun Journal reported that Flagship announced the closure on Sunday, six months after it shuttered its Oxford location. The Massachusetts-based chain still has theaters in Auburn, Waterville, Thomaston and Wells.

In Flagship’s announcement, manager Shane Phalen said, “20 theater screens is just too many in the Lewiston/Auburn area in the current economic climate." The newspaper noted that the Lewiston theater was the remaining location that hadn’t converted to digital projectors, a standard adopted by the movie industry that has created challenges for other small theaters.
