F.W. Webb, a wholesale distributor of construction and engineering goods, plans to move into a 70,000-square-feet space in Lewiston this fall.

The space, at 9 Lexington St., will house the distributor's warehouse and a 6,000-square-foot showroom.

F.W. Webb, which supplies parts to plumbing, heating and air conditioning contractors, has outgrown its current space on Forrestal Street, where it has been for 23 years.

“This location will be the largest F.W. Webb building in the central part of the state. It is very close to I-95, will provide easy access to our customer base, and allow us to support some of the smaller locations in our area," said Jake Viel, the company's operations manager.

F.W. Webb, which is based in Bedford, Mass., claims to be the Northeast's largest wholesale distributor of plumbing, heating, cooling, HVAC/R, LP Gas and industrial products. It has 3,000 employees in nine states, and annual sales of more than $1 billion a year, according to its website. It has 13 sites in Maine alone, with the three largest in Portland, Hampden and Lewiston.

In Lewiston, F.W. Webb's new site is less than a mile from its longtime location on Forrestal Street, which Viel said will help with the transition.

“We plan to expand our staff and product offering to better support the contractors in our area," Viel said. "On the retail side, we will have a 6,000-square-foot Frank Webb Home Center, nearly double the size of the one in our current building. This will encompass the latest designs in bath, kitchen and lighting products.”

Viel said the old location is 39,750 square feet. In addition to having more square footage, the new site will have 30-foot ceilings.

The city of Lewiston hailed F.W. Webb's move.

“Expansions like this one are a reminder of the ongoing growth, development, and opportunities that are alive and well right here in Lewiston. I am also pleased to hear that the expansion will lead to additional staff offerings. We are proud to be the home base for F.W. Webb and look forward to the expansion opening,” said Mayor Carl L. Sheline. “The fact that F.W. Webb wanted to remain here and expand here speaks extremely well of Lewiston’s business environment.”
