Peter Hayes

According to a news release, during his time with Healthcare Purchaser Alliance, Hayes began to gain national attention and led multiple efforts that helped create his lasting legacy.

Hayes pioneered innovative strategies, such as medical travel and centers of excellence, quality and pricing transparency, and value-based purchasing. These efforts have not only become industry standards and helped ensure employees have access to high-quality care, but have also been recognized and featured in publications and case studies.

During his career, he focused on helping others in the community. In the early stages of his career, he worked as a consultant for Marsh McLennan, where he brought his insights and strategic guidance to clients navigating complex health care landscapes.

Later, as the director of health and wellness for Hannaford Supermarkets, Hayes gained experience managing employees, which helped him understand the challenges faced by employers in providing high-value health care for their employees. During this time he also founded the Maine Health Management Coalition, now known as the Healthcare Purchaser Alliance.

Hayes returned to the organization he help found and has guided the Healthcare Purchaser Alliance through an evolution that placed it at the forefront of health care innovation and thought leadership.

Two governors reached out to Hayes to serve on health care reform commissions; he took on leadership roles at the Dempsey Center, United Way, Mercy Hospital Quality Committee, and Saddleback Healthcare Task Force. He also served six years on the Scarborough Town Council.

Hayes also served on multiple boards, including the Leapfrog Group, the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions, and numerous advisory capacities for national insurers, pharmacy benefit managers and start-up entities.

Hayes plans to spend his retirement filled with family, travel, skiing and trips to Rangeley.
