A 100-foot “superyacht” built by East Boothbay-based Hodgdon Yachts is heading to Australia for a series of highly competitive races, including the iconic Rolex Sydney Hobart race.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the carbon yacht was built for Netscape founder and billionaire Jim Clark and his wife, Kristy Hinze Clark. Jim Clark has said the project “was like building a Formula One car from scratch, although hopefully not quite as expensive.”
The yacht, which has a 150-foot mast and a 10,764-square-foot spinnaker, has the potential to reach nearly 30 knots, and possibly even 40 knots under the right conditions, Bridgid Murphy, spokesperson for North Sails, a Rhode Island company that was involved in the superyacht project, told Mainebiz. She said speed hasn’t been precisely measured yet.
