Maine music therapy entrepreneur wins $10K in national competition

Maine music therapist and entrepreneur Kate Beever has won $10,000 in a nationwide small business competition hosted by the UPS Store and Inc. magazine.

Beever, profiled by Mainebiz last year in a feature story about the growing music therapy field, was the first runner-up in the final competition held in Hollywood last week. The competition was judged by Robert Herjavec, a Canadian businessman, investor and TV personality of "Shark Tank" fame.

Beever founded Maine Music & Health in 2011 and works in both hospital and residential settings. Her practice focuses mainly on patients with cancer, brain injuries and developmental disabilities.

"It's been an exciting week," Beever told Mainebiz upon her return from the West Coast, saying she plans to use the money for training materials and instruments. She also plans to put some aside in a fund for scholarships.

"I've given out a small scholarship to a high school senior for the past two years and hope to continue that," she said.

She's currently seeing clients once a week at the new Good Medicine Collective on Portland's West End, and hopes to help plan music therapy groups and workshops in the new space as well.

Beever has been a proactive advocate of the music therapy profession, which became formalized after the two world wars to help veterans cope with physical and emotional trauma.

She holds a master's degree in music psychotherapy from New York University and moved back to Maine to start her music therapy practice.
