Maine voters approve hike in the minimum wage

By a solid margin, Maine voters approved Question 4 to raise the state’s minimum wage with a vote of 55.85% in favor and 44.15% opposing the measure.

Now the minimum wage will rise to $9 an hour in 2017, which will be followed by a $1 rise per year until it reaches $12 in 2020. After that, the minimum wage will be adjusted in regards to the consumer price index, Maine Public reported.

Additionally, tipped workers in Maine will get annual wage increases until their base pay is equal to the adjusted minimum wage, according to Maine Public.

About one in three workers in Maine will get a minimum wage rise with the passing of Question 4, Maine Public said in quoting the Maine Center for Economic Policy.
