Maritime museum launches national search for new director

The Maine Maritime Museum launched a national search for an executive director and named Christopher Timm, its chief curator and director of external affairs, as interim director until a permanent leader is named.

Amy Lent, who served as the museum’s director for 14 years, left abruptly last year after a contract dispute with the board.

Since her departure, two museum staffers, Timm and Jason Morin, director of operations, were serving as co-leaders to temporarily manage operations, the museum said. Earlier this month, Timm was named interim executive director.

“We are incredibly grateful for the museum staff who have all stepped up to expertly steer the museum through its busiest year to date. We appreciate Chris’ willingness to step into the interim role and are confident he will successfully lead the staff through this transitional period,” said Laura Burns, chair of the museum’s board of trustees.

The Bath museum formed a search committee of eight people, including trustees, staff, volunteers and residents of Bath. The museum plans to hire an executive search firm to assist in the effort.

“Our staff and board are excited to begin a new chapter at the Maine Maritime Museum, and we are committed to finding the most qualified candidate to lead the museum into its 60th year,” said Lincoln Paine, vice chair of the museum’s board of trustees and chair of the search committee.

The museum includes a 20-acre campus on the Kennebec River, the historic Percy & Small shipyard, working boatshop and blacksmith shops, and dozens of exhibits on Maine's maritime history. The year-round museum employs 30 staff and has more than 250 volunteers.

Last month, the museum took legal steps to insulate it from potential liability from expected lawsuits following the capsizing of its historic fishing schooner that spilled 18 people into the Kennebec River.
