MEREDA’s fall conference to examine Maine’s housing crisis

The Maine Real Estate and Development Association is “committed to action" when it comes to Maine's housing crunch, according to the organization's president, Shannon Richards.

“The housing problem in Maine has reached an inflection point and MEREDA is … bringing solutions to the table at the state level and working with municipalities and stakeholders to make changes that will help create more homes in Maine,” said Richards, founder of Portland-based Hay Runner, a real estate, architecture and construction firm.

Housing solutions are the focus of the organization’s half-day fall conference, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Hannaford Hall on the University of Southern Maine’s Portland campus.

Keynote speaker Christopher Herbert, managing director of the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies, will share a national perspective and insights on the situation in Maine.

Ken Entenmann, chief investment officer and chief economist at NBT Bank/NBT Wealth, will provide a mid-year update on both the local and national economy.

Elizabeth Frazier, partner at Portland-based Pierce Atwood, will moderate a conversation on municipal challenges faced by developers, and to close the session, Dr. Herbert will lead a discussion on innovations in housing development.

Panelists will include:

  • Vanessa L. Farr, Haley Ward
  • Hope Eye, Eastern Maine Development Corp.
  • Benjamin R.K. Breadmore, the town of Holden
  • Rebecca Hatfield, Hancock Lumber
  • Kyle Barker, Primary Projects
  • Chris Marshall, GreenMars

Registration information can be found on MEREDA’s website.
