Six Maine businesses received grants of $1,000 awarded through a competitive application process to help promote and market their products and services.

The grants were awarded by New Ventures Maine — a program of the University of Maine at Augusta that provides free classes and individual coaching in planning careers, starting businesses and managing money.

The grants will support marketing and promotion, including printed marketing materials, tradeshow displays, website development and social media campaigns.

"The number of applicants we had this year nearly doubled — we received over 150 applications versus 70 in our previous competition,” said Alicia LaFosse, the organization’s microenterprise program manager. “Local entrepreneurs need support during start-up and our participants say that mini-grants can make a real difference on their path to success.”

At Nonprofit Solution Hub in Bangor, Renée Johansson said the grant will be used for a multi-channel marketing campaign to secure new nonprofit clients for grant-writing services.

“This grant is more than just a financial boost for my business,” said Johansson, the company’s founder. “It’s an opportunity to deepen my mission of supporting nonprofits that do vital work in our communities.”
